Even after only a few hours, you’re already pining for figure skating. All bases are covered here. On Saturday night, February 19, forty of your favorite figure skaters from the 2022 Winter Olympics will perform in a gala (U.S. time).
The all-star display will undoubtedly feature a group number, with eight men, six women, five pairs teams, and eight ice dance couples showcasing their personality, favorite music, and greatest skating talents.
Gala coverage begins at 11 p.m. ET on NBCOlympics.com and Peacock and 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC. In total, there were 18 figure skaters in these Games, and they all won medals in one of four categories. Here you will find out about gala exhibition figure skating 2022 time.
Who’s Taking Part in the Exhibition Gala?
The Capital Indoor Stadium ice rink will be the place for all Olympic medal winners and their guests to let their hair down and have a good time. Defending Olympic ice dance champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France, silver medalists Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov of Russia, and bronze medalists Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the United States will all be in attendance.
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada, as well as home favorites Wang Shiyie and Liu Xinyu, will be among the five other duos competing. Two-time Olympic champion and fourth-place finisher Hanyu Yuzuru of Japan has announced he will skate at the gala. Nathan Chen, the man he beat to become Olympic champion, will also be there, as will Kagiyama Yuma and Uno Shoma.
Canadian Keegan Messing and American Vincent Zhou, who both missed the men’s singles competitions due to Covid, will compete this time around. Defending champion Anna Shcherbakova, silver medalist Alexandra Trusova of the ROC, and bronze medalist Sakamoto Kaori of Japan will all be competing in their final Beijing Olympics.
You Young of Korea, American Alysa Liu (who placed seventh at Beijing 2022), and Belgian Loena Hendrickx will also be competing (eighth). These are preliminary findings. Olympic pairs skating champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China have expressed interest in doing a musical number at the next gala. The five-couple competition also includes the silver-medal winners Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov.
What to Expect at the Exhibition Gala?
The exhibition gala is a chance for the skaters to let loose and perform their own programs without judgment from the judges. For instance, the sixth-placed Italian ice dance team of Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics performed to the subject of Charlie Chaplin.
They sent us back to the 1990s with Barbie Girl, thanks to their countrymen Valentina Marchei and Ondrej Hotarek. Bronze medalist in Pyeongchang for Spain, Javier Fernandez, transformed into “Super Javi” and transported the crowd to the ’80s.
He taught an aerobics session at Sochi 2014, complete with costume changes and water squirts à la Flashdance. Surya Bonaly, a French skater who placed fourth in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, became the first person to attempt and perform a back flip, a feat that had previously been banned from competition.
What Olympic Events are Happening?
As of today, Day 16, there have been five medal events, the first of which was the women’s curling competition for the gold medal. At 8:05 p.m. ET, Japan and Great Britain will do battle.
The alpine skiing mixed team parallel slalom event was originally slated to take place on Friday, but has since been moved to Saturday at 8 p.m. EST. Around 8:30 p.m. EST, heats three and four of the four-man bobsled will get underway, and at 11:10 p.m. EST, the men’s gold medal hockey game will get underway.
Finland will compete against the ROC for the right to win the gold medal. Around 10 p.m. EST on Saturday, the women’s 30 km freestyle mass start cross-country skiing race will get underway (originally scheduled for Sunday at 1:30 a.m. EST).
Now that the medals have been awarded, the world’s best figure skaters will take the stage at the Exhibition Gala on Saturday night, an event in which scores are not kept but in which the skaters’ technical ability and artistic interpretation take center stage.
The final round of the Olympic competition will be a chance for the world’s greatest athletes to show off their skills after two weeks of intense competition.
In addition to the previously mentioned two-time gold medalist Hanyu Yuzuru of Japan, other known competitors include recently released COVID-19 quarantined American Vincent Zhou.
